Brentford chief sends crystal clear David Raya message to Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur’s links with Brentford goalkeeper David Raya are no secret. Now, the Bees’ technical director Lee Dykes has sent a crystal clear message to Spurs.
Pay double or forget about Raya. Tottenham are apparently willing to around £20million for the Spain international. Brentford value him at £40million.
Classic Tottenham negotiation tactics. But given the difference in the two teams’ valuation is so large, it could prove to be a major hurdle in our bid to sign the 27-year-old.
Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that Spurs are close to agreeing personal terms with Raya. But we can’t do anything about signing the Spaniard until and unless Brentford give us the green light.
Spurs should hurry
He does have one year left on his deal at the Gtech Community Stadium. Speaking in a recent interview, Dykes stated that Raya dreaming of a move away from Brentford is fine by him.
But he wants Brentford to receive an appropriate fee for him. He said, via the Evening Standard:
“Listen, the market sets itself. This summer will be a big goalkeeper market, there’s a lot of goalkeepers that will be available. Phil and Matt will assess the valuation at the time. My point at David Raya is you need to pay double [of £20m] because he can play No10. You get two positions.”
That’s obviously a joke but Raya is pretty great with his feet. Hugo Lloris has been a reliable shot-stopper but we haven’t had many chances to build a team that can play out from the back due to his limitations on the ball.
Moreover, the legendary Frenchman is 36 and at the end of his playing days. Perhaps Brentford sense Spurs’ desperation to have a No. 1 ready to replace Lloris for next season.

Tottenham, meanwhile, know Raya has denied two contract offers at Brentford and the Bees run the risk of losing him on a free next year. It is a risky negotiation tactic from Spurs because for a player like Raya, a top club can come in knocking anytime.
