Tottenham want to sign Japanese defender Hiroki Ito from VfB Stuttgart
According to Japanese outlet Sponichi Annex, Tottenham Hotspur want to sign talented defender Hiroki Ito from VfB Stuttgart.
The Stuttgart defender has caught the attention of new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, who has been actively seeking to bring in Japanese players to the team. Ito’s name has recently emerged as a potential target for Tottenham.
It seems that Stuttgart are already making contingency plans, actively scouting for possible replacements should Ito make the move to Tottenham. Hiroki Ito‘s journey began in his homeland of Japan, where he started his professional career with Jubilo Iwata.
Despite plying his trade in the Japanese second tier, Ito’s abilities did not go unnoticed. Stuttgart came knocking, recognizing his potential and swiftly integrating him into their first-team setup.
Since then, the versatile 24-year-old has amassed an impressive 58 Bundesliga appearances, demonstrating his adaptability by excelling in various positions, including centre back, left back, and even as a holding midfielder.
What sets Ito apart is his natural left-footedness, a trait that Tottenham would undoubtedly welcome with open arms. Left-footed defenders are a coveted commodity, and their presence can bring a different dynamic to a team’s defensive structure.
Clement Lenglet’s loan spell from Barcelona last season left much to be desired, prompting Tottenham to explore other options in the centre-back position. Ito, a young and ascending talent, represents an intriguing prospect who may not require a significant financial outlay.
This aligns with Postecoglou’s previous approach at Celtic, where he successfully tapped into the Japanese market to secure the services of Kyogo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi, Yuki Kobayashi, and Tomoki Iwata.
