Ben Jacobs: Wages could derail Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Manchester United star Jadon Sancho
Ben Jacobs, a renowned CBS Sports journalist, has shed light on Tottenham Hotspur’s potential interest in Manchester United star Jadon Sancho. However, he expressed concerns that the player’s wages could pose a significant hurdle in any prospective deal.
Since his high-profile transfer to Manchester United two years ago, Sancho has struggled to live up to expectations. The fleet-footed winger has managed a mere 12 goals and six assists in 79 appearances for the Red Devils, failing to make a substantial impact.
Erik Ten Hag’s team might consider cashing in on Sancho this summer if a bid of around £60 million is received. While Tottenham finds themselves captivated by Sancho’s abilities, they are not alone in their admiration.
Nevertheless, Jacobs dampened Tottenham’s hopes of acquiring the 23-year-old, citing the substantial transfer fee and the player’s wages as potential deterrents for the Lilywhites.
During an appearance on The Last Word On Spurs Podcast, Jacobs addressed the speculation surrounding Sancho’s potential move to Tottenham
“I think that Tottenham are looking at the possibility of Sancho because they see a real opportunity due to the player’s age and profile. But there are complications – one is fee and two is wages. Manchester United, as I understand it, don’t have Sancho at the top of their list to sell”
Therefore, Jacobs suggested that the first step would involve a conversation between Sancho and Erik ten Hag. This discussion would aim to establish the player’s future pathway at Manchester United and clarify the club’s expectations for the upcoming season.
If Sancho were to move to Tottenham, he might perceive it as an opportunity to receive more game time—a potentially decisive factor in his decision-making process. Under Postecoglou, he could become a key player.
While the issue of wages might pose a stumbling block, Jacobs emphasized that Manchester United would entertain the idea of selling Sancho for the right price. However, he also suggested that the figure would be considerably high.
