Leicester City to receive opening offer from Tottenham Hotspur for James Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to submit their opening offer to Leicester City to acquire the services of James Maddison, according to The Telegraph.

Spurs are ready to pay an initial £40 million plus add-ons for the England international. However, the Foxes want up to £60 million for him. But the North London side are hoping to compromise a bit on the deal.

The playmaker is a priority target for Ange Postecoglou. As things stand, the Lilywhites are leading Newcastle United in the race for the 26-year-old. The Magpies have cooled their interest as they are about to secure the services of Sandro Tonali.

Leicester signed Maddison from Norwich City in the summer of 2018. Over the years, the midfielder has developed into a quality playmaker and has caught a lot of people’s attention over the past few campaigns.

However, the King Power Stadium side were relegated from the English top flight last season. Despite their struggles, the English national was one of the few positives for the Foxes.

But now that the East Midlands club are in the Championship, it would not be a surprise to see the 26-year-old leave. Therefore, Tottenham cannot afford to be stingy and allow other teams to enter the race.

Spurs’ engine room has seemingly been without any real creativity for some time now. The likes of Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg, Yves Bissouma and Oliver Skipp are all more defensive-minded.

As a result, Harry Kane has had to drop deep often to get a hold of the ball over the past few seasons. Rodrigo Bentancur’s injury did not help our cause either. The Uruguayan was in fine form before being sidelined in the previous campaign.

Maddison is a versatile player capable of playing in multiple roles in the middle of the park or up front. The English national also has a keen eye for goal and has the ability to set up chances for others. It remains to be seen how much the North London side will have to pay to get a hold of his signature.
