Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet and Tottenham Hotspur agree three-year contract

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to a three-year contract to sign Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet this summer, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

Spurs have come to a consensus on personal terms with the France international. However, the North London side are yet to agree on the fee to be paid to the Blaugrana to acquire the services of the centre-back.

Tottenham are not willing to go over the top to sign the 28-year-old. Thus, while the Camp Nou side are squeezing for as much as they can, the La Liga giants cannot afford to dilly-dally due to their financial situation.

Fabrizio Romano recently added that Lenglet isn’t a priority right now for Spurs but he did not negate our interest in signing him on a permanent deal this summer.

As for Lenglet, he spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Spurs. Now, the defender is keen on making his way back to the N17. To that end, it is expected that the North London side will be able to get a deal done for €10 million plus add-ons.

The French national joined Barcelona in the summer of 2018 after impressing at Sevilla. After being an important figure in his first couple of seasons in Catalunya, the centre-back lost prominence. With the arrival of Xavi, the 28-year-old fell further down the pecking order.

At the moment, the Spanish gaffer has the likes of Andreas Christensen, Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde at his disposal. Therefore, it looks like the Lenglet is surplus to requirements.

Last season, the French national became a key player in Tottenham’s backline. The North London side did not look strong defensively and the 28-year-old left a lot to be desired at times.

With the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, it remains to be seen what formation we play. Cristian Romero has proven himself over the years and should evidently be the first name on the team sheet. However, who will partner the Argentine? Only time will tell.

Lenglet was decent in the previous campaign for us. However, the French national did not do enough to deserve a starting berth. But for the cut-price we could potentially get him at, the 28-year-old is a quality backup to have in the squad.
