Eric Dier tipped to leave in Tottenham Hotspur summer clear-out
Former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Alan Hutton has tipped Eric Dier to part ways with the North London side in the ongoing transfer window.
Spurs have appointed Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach after Antonio Conte, Cristian Stellinin and Ryan Mason tried their hands in the dugout. The Australian manager is expected to oversee the departure of several players from the Lilywhites’ squad this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hutton, who spent a few seasons during his playing career at Tottenham, believes the former Sporting CP star should be sold by the new gaffer.
“You think of some of the players who are still there who have been on loan, [Tanguy] Ndombele, record signing, [Giovani] Lo Celso, Harry Winks, these are guys that you do not even hear about.
“Then you look at the likes of [Davinson] Sanchez, [Eric] Dier, [Joe] Rodon, there are so many players within there that he will have to move on.”
Spurs signed Dier in the summer of 2014. The England international has seen his role at the North London side evolve over the years. Unfortunately, the defender has been inconsistent.
Pochettino used him in multiple positions. The Argentine was our manager between 2014 and 2019. The 29-year-old started off at right-back and then was used as a defensive midfielder.
However, Dier has predominantly been played as a centre-back over the last few seasons. But the English national has not been reliable. He has often left a lot to be desired at the back.
In the previous campaign, the defender made 42 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham, scoring two goals and providing one assist. Unfortunately, the Lilywhites struggled defensively and managed to keep just 10 clean sheets in the league.
Apart from the 29-year-old, our other centre-backs did not live up to the expectations either. Davinson Sanchez, Ben Davies and Clement Lenglet were underwhelming. Even Cristiano Romero was not at his best.

Therefore, Hutton is right in suggesting parting ways with some of our stars. However, we cannot let everyone leave at once. While Dier is not a reliable starter, the English national has enough abilities to be on the bench for us.
