Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur make huge breakthrough in James Maddison pursuit

Fabrizio Romano has provided a huge update in Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.

The England international has been linked with a move to Spurs in recent weeks with competition from Newcastle United. But things were going slow and it wasn’t clear if Maddson would want to join Spurs.

But in the past few hours, Romano has claimed that Maddison has agreed on personal terms with Tottenham. The next step was, of course, reaching an agreement with Leicester over a fee.

Spurs recently made a combined £50million offer for Maddison and Harvey Barnes which was swiftly rejected. It seems the Lilywhites have since come to their senses and made an offer Leicester find appealing.

What next for Maddison and Spurs?

According to the Italian transfer expert, the two clubs have reached a verbal agreement on a £40million fee. They are now discussing other formalities related to the payment Tottenham will make to the Foxes.

This seems like a good piece of business from Daniel Levy and co. He can play as a No. 10, out wide and in central midfield, and specialises in chance creation — a profile our first-team midfielders notably lack.

He is a player who will increase the quality of our starting XI instantly and provide stellar competition to some of our stalwart players. There was hardly any chance for Leicester to retain Maddison once they were relegated to the Championship.
