Father of new Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario explains the reasoning behind Ange Postecoglou signing him
Michel Vicario, the father of new Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo, explained why Ange Postecoglou chose to sign him from Empoli this summer.
A couple of days ago, Tottenham confirmed the arrival of Italian shot-stopper Vicario from Empoli for a fee in the region of £17m.
The Italian’s father told the media that Spurs boss Postecoglou was impressed by the player’s rise up the ranks, just like how the latter has become the manager of a Premier League club.
Here’s what Michele said when asked about his son’s transfer to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium (h/t Football Italia, via Football.London):
“A week ago, he [Guglielmo] had a video call with his new coach, Ange Postecoglou.
“They spoke in English and the coach told him that he had chosen him because Guglielmo worked his way up just like him. The coach was then impressed to see that the boy already knows English.”
Vicario has risen up the ranks in Italian football, having joined the Udinese U-19 side in 2013. He moved to Venezia, then Cagliari before playing for Empoli in the last two seasons.
The Italian international, who is behind Gigi Donnarumma in the pecking order there, kept 14 clean sheets in 69 league appearances for Empoli in those two seasons.
Now, the 26-year-old gets a chance to don the gloves of one of the big clubs in the Premier League. That is some movement up the ranks for the Italian.
It is quite synonymous with how Postecoglou was before he got the Spurs job this summer. The Greek-Australian has been managing football teams since 1995, but never in the Premier League.
He did terrifically well as a Celtic boss for two years, winning them the treble last season. He has worked as an Australian national team coach and has done well there. Finally, after all that work, the 57-year-old gets a crack at a job that would require all of his skills because Spurs are in a fickle position at the moment.

Vicario would most probably be his number one because Hugo Lloris has signalled his intention to leave. The Frenchman, to be fair, did start to look shaky in goal for the last 2-3 years. It is perhaps the right time to replace him with a younger keeper.
