Tottenham Hotspur eyeing free transfer for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet
Tottenham Hotspur hope to acquire the services of Clement Lenglet for free in the ongoing transfer window from Barcelona, according to AS (h/t Express).
The France international spent the 2022/23 season on loan at the North London side. Now, the Lilywhites are keen to get a hold of the centre-back’s signature on a permanent basis this summer.
However, they are yet to agree a fee with the Blaugrana for the defender. As per Sport, while the 28-year-old has come to a consensus with Spurs regarding personal terms, the Camp Nou side want €10 million for him.
To that end, Tottenham are waiting to see if Barcelona will terminate Lenglet’s contract. The French national is on a considerably high salary at the Blaugrana and they are keen to part ways with him to lower their wage bill.
As things stand, the Camp Nou side are going through a well-documented financial crisis. Therefore, the North London side are willing to wait and see how the situation will unfold in the coming future.
If the Catalan outfit do end up getting rid of the centre-back, it would be a wise choice from Spurs’ management. Singing a player like the 28-year-old potentially on a free transfer would be great business.
Lenglet became a key player in Tottenham’s backline in the 2022/23 campaign. The French national played on the left-hand side of the back three. Unfortunately, the North London side looked shaky.
The 28-year-old was inconsistent for the Lilywhites last season. However, most of the team underperformed under Antonio Conte, Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason.

Langlet will evidently add quality in depth to our defence. It is not always that someone of the centre-back’s quality is available for nothing. But what decision will Barcelona take on the French national? Only time will tell.
