Lyall Thomas says Guglielmo Vicario was Tottenham’s first choice; not David Raya
According to esteemed journalist Lyall Thomas, the club’s priority was securing a new goalkeeper at the beginning of the summer. While many claims suggested that David Raya was the top target, Thomas reveals that Guglielmo Vicario was, in fact, the primary objective for the Lilywhites.
Last season, Tottenham’s defensive frailties were glaringly apparent, with a staggering 63 goals conceded in the 2022/23 campaign. These defensive shortcomings necessitated urgent changes, and new manager Ange Postecoglou wasted no time in addressing this critical issue.
While the acquisition of James Maddison has garnered considerable excitement among Spurs fans, it is the arrival of Vicario that may prove to be the most pivotal signing. Tottenham have been desperate for a new goalie.
Initially, it seemed that David Raya was the preferred choice between the posts. Personal terms were agreed with the Brentford shot-stopper, but negotiations with his club hit an impasse due to their £40 million valuation of the player.
However, Lyall Thomas refutes the prevailing notion that Raya was Tottenham’s top goalkeeping target, shedding light on the real story. It seems that the club were always on to Vicario.
The Italian goalkeeper’s performances last season for an Italian club outside the top echelons of Serie A caught Tottenham’s attention. Here is what Thomas had to say about the transfer situation
“He was arguably the best keeper in Italy outside the top teams last season. And actually, I understand that he was the first choice for Tottenham.”
Thomas believes that the perception of Raya being the primary target arose due to the impressive season he had enjoyed. While Tottenham held a genuine interest in the Brentford goalkeeper and were admirers of his abilities, Vicario had emerged as the true number one.
Guglielmo Vicario’s name was undoubtedly on Tottenham’s radar this summer. The club boasts a robust scouting network in Italy, and it is not surprising that Vicario emerged as their top preference for the goalkeeping role.
