Empoli reveals Inter Milan tried to hijack Tottenham Hotspur’s Guglielmo Vicario transfer
Speaking to Italian outlet CalcioMercato, Empoli president Fabrizio Corsi has disclosed that Inter Milan made a last-minute attempt to hijack Guglielmo Vicario’s move to Tottenham.
The North London club had reportedly reached an agreement worth £16.4m with Empoli for the talented goalkeeper, and the deal materialized swiftly once Spurs shifted their focus from David Raya to the Italian shot-stopper.
Vicario, a 26-year-old goalkeeper, had caught the attention of several clubs, including Inter Milan, Juventus, AS Roma, and Fiorentina this summer. Tottenham’s urgency in finalizing the Vicario deal was driven by their concerns over Inter Milan potentially pursuing the Italian goalkeeper if they were to lose Andre Onana.
It seems that Tottenham’s apprehensions were well-founded, as Corsi recently confirmed that Inter Milan did indeed attempt to derail the agreement. However, by that point, Empoli had already secured a deal with the Lilywhites, leaving the Nerazzurri empty-handed.
In an interview with CalcioMercato, Corsi shed light on the situation surrounding Vicario’s transfer
“Inter called me until the last day available regarding the agreement and the contract of Vicario. We had already received the documents, from individuals who were both correct and respectable. They simply inquired about the progress of the negotiations, only to realize that things were already heading in Tottenham’s direction”
Tottenham’s pursuit of Guglielmo Vicario was evidently motivated by their desire to strengthen their goalkeeping department swiftly and efficiently. With the potential departure of Hugo Lloris looming, Spurs were eager to secure a talented replacement promptly.
Vicario’s performances for Empoli last season had caught the attention of many top clubs in Italy, making him a highly sought-after player in the transfer market. His agility, shot-stopping ability, and command of the penalty area showcased his potential to thrive in the Premier League.
While the attempted hijack by Inter Milan added a touch of drama to the proceedings, Tottenham can now look forward to having Vicario don the Lilywhite jersey in the upcoming season.
