Newcastle United join Tottenham Hotspur in the race for LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David
Tottenham Hotspur have been joined by Premier League rivals Newcastle United in the race for LOSC Lille star Jonathan David, according to L’Equipe (h/t Chronicle Live).
The Magpies are looking to bolster their attack in the ongoing transfer window. To that end, the Tyneside outfit have identified the Canada international as a potential option this summer.
However, the St James’ Park side will face competition from Spurs to acquire the services of the striker. But the North London side’s pursuit of the 23-year-old will depend on the future of Harry Kane.
As things stand, the English skipper has one year left on his current contract at Tottenham. Bayern Munich are one of the teams looking to get a hold of the 29-year-old’s signature at the moment.
Lille signed David in the summer of 2020. Since then, the Canadian has developed into a quality number nine at the Ligue 1 outfit. The striker also won the league title with the French side in 2021.
At Newcastle, Eddie Howe has done a fantastic job so far. The Magpies will be playing in the Champions League next season. Last season, they finished fourth in the PL table as Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson vied for a spot up front.
On the other hand, Tottenham had a season to forget. We ended the 2022/23 term in eighth place. While the Lilywhites have an abundance of talent in the attack, Kane was the only one who lived up to the expectations.
In the previous campaign, Son Heung-min looked like a shadow of his former self. As for Dejan Kulusevski, injuries hampered his continuity. Summer 2022 signing Richarlison was unable to make an impact either.

Therefore, we evidently need to plan for a future without Kane. In case the England national will depart, Spurs will need someone to fill the void. David seems to be a decent option in that regard.
