Tottenham Hotspur told to sign Harry Maguire from Manchester United this summer
Premier League icon Teddy Sheringham has urged Tottenham Hotspur to sign Manchester United defender Harry Maguire this summer.
The England international has lost his place at the Red Devils since the arrival of Erik ten Hag. In the previous campaign, the 30-year-old was a bit-part player at the Old Trafford side and has been recently stripped of the captain’s armband.
Speaking to Lord Ping (h/t football.london), Sheringham, who is known for his stints at Spurs and Man United, wants the North London side to acquire the services of Maguire to bolster their defence.
“Harry Maguire would be an excellent option for Tottenham’s defence. Whenever you watch Maguire play for England, he rarely lets anyone down. He is a solid, proven professional that is well-suited for the Premier League.”
In the summer of 2019, the Red Devils got a hold of the 30-year-old’s signature from Leicester City. Subsequently, the centre-back was an influential member of the Old Trafford side for a number of years.
However, last season, Ten Hag preferred the partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in the backline. Subsequently, the English national started in just eight games in the Premier League for Man United.
Despite Maguire’s struggles at club level, Gareth Southgate has continued to show immense faith in him. While minutes have been hard to come by at the Red Devils for the centre-back, he is still a key player in the England setup.
At Tottenham, the 2022/23 campaign was not the best for us defensively. Under Antonio Conte, we were inconsistent and were unable to keep clean sheets and hold on to leads.
Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies have been the preferred options in the centre-back areas for the North London side in the previous two seasons. Clement Lenglet, who joined Spurs on a temporary move from Barcelona, was also at our disposal in the previous campaign.

Tottenham evidently need more quality in their backline. However, Maguire’s form with United has not been encouraging and it would be wise to steer clear of his transfer this summer.
