Tottenham Hotspur’s deal for Micky van de Ven is not progressing
According to the Athletic (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur have reached a roadblock in their negotiations with Wolfsburg for Micky van de Ven with the deal supposedly ‘not progressing’.
The 6 ft 4 in defender has been on the club’s radar throughout this summer as one of the defensive reinforcements that Tottenham are planning to make. However, there has been no breakthrough on a deal yet.
Apparently, personal terms with the player are not an issue. Micky van de Ven is more than happy to take the next step in his career and join Tottenham but the problem has been agreeing on a transfer fee with Wolfsburg.
This has led to a feeling amongst the Tottenham decision-makers that the Bundesliga side does not have any intention of letting their talented defender leave, although a substantial offer might make them change their mind.
The problem for Tottenham or any club that is interested in a move for the defender is the fact that he just recently signed a new deal with Wolfsburg that would see him remain contracted to the club until 2027. (Transfermarkt)
Tottenham as of the moment still do not have any intention of giving up on the pursuit of Van de Ven. However, if Wolfsburg just don’t come around on an asking price, the North London club might be forced to look at other options.
One thing that Tottenham cannot afford at any cost is to reach the end of the transfer window not having brought in any new central defender. It would be a ploy that is set up to fail if past evidence is anything to go by.
With the exception of Cristian Romero who is genuinely world-class, there is not a single central defender at the club who inspires confidence. A team can buy all the attackers in the world they want but with a shaky defence, it is of no good.

Would Van de Ven be a good signing? Definitely yes. However, the 22-year-old Dutchman is not the only option in the market and maybe it is time that Tottenham start getting proactive.
