Andre Onana rejected Tottenham before Man United transfer

Andre Onana had the worst night of his life as a player when Lucas Moura scored a hat-trick for Tottenham Hotspur against Ajax in the second leg of the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League semifinals.

Four years later, Spurs apparently made attempts to bring him on board as they looked for Hugo Lloris’ successor. This is according to the player’s agent Albert Botines.

He recently said, via Italian outlet Calciomercato.it:

“It all started a few months ago – begins the prosecutor -. Towards April, many inquired about the player. Tottenham have asked for information, Chelsea have had a very strong interest.

“There were meetings in London and Chelsea also met with Inter, but ten Hag was key. We are looking forward to facing great managers like Guardiola and trying to win titles with Manchester United. We have a great desire to rock.”

Maybe Guglielmo Vicario wasn’t our first choice but he seems like a solid buy. The former Empoli goalkeeper, 26, cost the club £17.2million in initial fees.

He is in and around the Italian national team and a move to Spurs will give him the pedestal he needs to be noticed by the Azzurri. For us, Vicario will be a much-needed reinforcement and Lloris’ successor.

The legendary French goalkeeper is at the wrong end of the 30s and became error-prone in recent seasons. The 36-year-old is in the final year of his contract in N17 and is likely to leave the club sometime soon.

Onana is a smart goalkeeper who excels with the ball at his feet. But Manchester United had to dish out a huge fee of £43.9million to sign the 27-year-old from Inter Milan. That is surely an amount Daniel Levy and co. would have raised their eyebrows at.

It is good Spurs enquire about different avenues before making a decision. Vicario is a sensible signing and we have absolutely no regrets of missing out on Onana for that reason.
