Romano confirms Lucas Moura has joined Sao Paulo after Tottenham Hotspur summer exit

Lucas Moura is apparently on the verge of joining Sao Paulo just a month after his Tottenham Hotspur exit.

The Brazilian winger arrived in north London from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in January 2018 for £25million. Since then, he has had his ups and downs here.

But it never seemed that Lucas established himself as a first-team starter here. He had the pace, dribbling skills and attacking intelligence to make him an elite forward.

But for one reason or the other, Spurs never really gave him an extended run as a first-team starter in the same manner as they did with, say, Son Heung-min. Just a month after leaving Spurs, it seems he has joined Sao Paulo.

Lucas to Brazil

According to Fabrizio Romano, he has formally signed a contract at the Brazilian club valid until the end of the year. He will play in the same team as former Everton and Real Madrid winger James Rodriguez.

Sao Paulo are, of course, the club where Lucas honed his skills for years before making the switch to PSG in January 2013 as a 20-year-old. Spurs fans will wish Lucas nothing but the best.

It is strange what could have come of his career in north London if he was played more often and trusted as a first-team starter. The hat trick against Ajax in the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League semifinals was supposed to be the start of something big for him.

Instead, things went downhill from there. Dejan Kulusevski’s arrival from Juventus sealed his fate. It’s not like his injuries helped him, either.

Antonio Conte even publicly voiced his frustrations at how often the former PSG star was injured. Let’s hope the 30-year-old keeps fit and has a pleasant time in Brazil. After that, who knows, a return to Europe could also be on the cards…
