Ange Postecoglou talks about resting Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane vs Barcelona
Speaking in the post-match press conference as quoted by Football. London, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has explained his reasoning behind resting Harry Kane from the trip to Barcelona.
Tottenham took the Spanish side on in the Joan Gamper trophy last night, a game that serves as an annual curtain riser for Barcelona before the actual season begins. Safe to say that the game did not end well for Spurs.
Barcelona took an early lead thanks to a goal from Robert Lewandowski but Tottenham hit back. A brace from an unlikely outlet in Oliver Skipp meant that the North London club went into the half-time break leading the game.
For much of the second half, Tottenham managed to see out the threat from Barcelona but everything changed when Lamine Yamal was brought on. The 16-year-old prodigy ran riot against the Spurs defence, being influential in Xavi’s side scoring three goals in a 15-minute period, eventually running out 4-2 winners.
Regardless of the final result, there were positives to take away from the game for Ange Postecoglou. We must also remember that Tottenham did not field their strongest team, and one prominent name missing was Harry Kane.
Speaking about the decision to leave the English superstar out, here is what Postecoglou had to say
“No but I’m sure you will. It wasn’t about giving the guys a rest. It was that I wasn’t going to give them game time so there’s no point in them travelling here. They’ll train tomorrow and they’ll train hard tomorrow. It was just that I wanted to use these two games”
When Kane was left out of the travelling party for last night’s game, it obviously started being linked back to his supposed links to Bayern Munich. However, it seems like all Postecoglou wanted to do was keep him fresh for the weekend.
Until Kane’s future gets sorted once and for all, there will be doubts about the Englishman and whether he will stay here. Ultimately, if he starts this weekend’s game against Brentford, all those doubts might be put to rest.
