Former Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso takes a dig at Tottenham after winning a pre-season game with Barcelona

Former Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso, who currently plays for Barcelona, takes a sly aim at Tottenham after winning a pre-season game.

Barcelona came from 2-1 down at their home ground to beat Spurs 4-2 and lift the Joan Gamper Trophy on Tuesday. It is as if they have lifted the Champions League trophy or something.

Tottenham went into that game without Harry Kane and did not have their full team out. La Liga champions, on the other hand, had most of their star guys playing some part in it. One of the ordinary players, also known as Alonso, came on in the second half.

Here’s what the former Chelsea player posted on Instagram after the game:

Boasting about a pre-season win against a rival who did not play their full team and had a game on Sunday is a bit cheap.

It is perhaps a way to cozy up to Chelsea fans again, whom he left behind when he jumped on the chance to join Barcelona last summer. Some club legend, that. He wasn’t liked there too much for too long either, given how shoddy his defending was when playing as a left wing-back.

One can expect better from a player representing one of the biggest clubs in Europe at the moment. It is all banter and stuff we know that, but doing it for a pre-season game is just boring.

Well, he got what he wanted though – attention and numbers on his Instagram story. He hasn’t been touted as a regular starter for Barca given Aljeandro Balde’s rise, so he has to do things to stay a relevant name. Kudos to Alonso for harnessing that to a large extent.

Lastly, on Tottenham, let’s hope that was a learning curve on how not to play when leading 2-1 with 10 minutes to go away to a tough team.
