Ange Postecoglou to decide on new Tottenham Hotspur captain after Harry Kane departure

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou will soon decide on the club’s new captain after the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

The England international has officially moved to the Bavarians in the ongoing transfer window. As things stand, the future of Hugo Lloris at the North London side is also uncertain.

Spurs are set to take on Brentford in their opening game of the season away from home in the Premier League on Sunday (13 August). It will be interesting to see who will lead the team onto the pitch with the armband.

Speaking to the media via football.london, Postecoglou revealed that he had been contemplating on who Tottenham’s new captain would be for some time due to the situation around Kane.

“We’ll go through that process tomorrow. Knowing that Harry wasn’t going to be here, it was something I had on my radar.

“I’m not a massive one for having an outstanding captain. Leadership is very transferrable through the group. Your youngest player can show leadership skills. It’s about creating a culture and environment that’s driven by the players.”

Ledley King was the last long-term captain at the North London side before Lloris. In the middle, we have had the likes of Michael Dawson don the armband.

In the shot-stopper’s absence in recent years, Kane was the go-to in terms of who would lead the team onto the pitch. However, with the 30-year-old parting ways with the club, Postecoglou has a big decision on his hands.

But the Australian manager has a few decent candidates to choose from. Son Heung-min will arguably be our talisman now in the attack now that the English skipper has left. Eric Dier has also been at the club for a long time now.

We also have a World Cup winner in our ranks. Cristian Romero has been our most consistent player for some time now. However, the Argentina international has often been on the sidelines in past seasons due to fitness issues.

Hopefully, Postecoglou will choose wisely. The captain is the face of the team on the pitch and has the responsibility to spur on the team when things are going sideways.
