Tottenham Hotspur make contact with Chelsea for Romelu Lukaku
According to journalist Alfredo Pedulla (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur have sounded out to Premier League rivals Chelsea regarding a potential summer deal for striker Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgian international is a very experienced and very travelled player who has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge. Lukaku appeared to be on his way to Inter Milan but the Nerazzurri backed out after he ghosted them to enter talks with Juventus.
The Turin giants are also yet to sign him despite uncertainty surrounding the future of their star striker Dusan Vlahovic. Their fans have no interest in watching Lukaku don the famous white and black stripes and have been vocal about it.
With Mauricio Pochettino also not sold on Lukaku’s abilities and character, the player’s time at the Bridge appears to be coming to a sad end. This could offer Tottenham an opportunity to make a move to address their shortcomings upfront.
Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich robs us of a certified goal-getter who can guarantee around 30 goals per campaign. Despite the promise shown by Ange Postecoglou’s opening-day draw at Brentford, the lack of an infallible goalscorer will hurt us in the long run.
As things stand, Richarlison is our lone senior striker and the Brazilian is far from clinical in front of goal. In fact, he failed to take advantage of a late opportunity against Brentford that could have seen us earn all three points. One could argue that the likes of Kane would have put away the opportunity.
Alejo Veliz has also arrived in north London but the 19-year-old is far from ready to be thrust into the deep end. Postecoglou does not appear to be in any hurry to play him earlier than intended, meaning the youngster is more of a long-term investment rather than a quick fix.

While Lukaku is a decent goalscorer, he has shown the uncanny ability to burn bridges at both Inter Milan and Chelsea, two clubs who have treated him rather fairly. The Belgian is more trouble than he is worth and Tottenham are better off looking elsewhere to replace Kane.
