Chelsea hold talks with Nottingham Forest for Tottenham Hotspur target Brennan Johnson
According to The Daily Mail, Premier League giants Chelsea have entered the fray for Tottenham Hotspur target Brennan Johnson in the summer transfer window.
The Nottingham Forest attacker has been a key part of Steve Cooper’s side and is attracting much attention for his performances. Capable of not just playing centrally but also out wide on the wings, the 22-year-old can be a versatile addition to most top sides.
Tottenham can do with versatile attackers following the appointment of Ange Postecoglou. The Australian’s tactics favour players who can play in an interchangeable frontline, something Johnson can do with good effect.
Chelsea are on the look for an attacker and were knocked back in their efforts to sign Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise. The 21-year-old has penned a new deal and will now stay put at Selhurst Park this summer.
This has seen Chelsea shift their focus to Johnson as the summer transfer window nears its conclusion. Forest values the 22-year-old at £50m, a significant investment based on his immense potential.
Despite the Blues quickly taking the lead in the race for Johnson, the player does not appear to be sold on a move to Stamford Bridge. Given the options available for Mauricio Pochettino, Johnson is unlikely to be a regular starter and it should impact his chances of securing regular playtime.
A reduced role in Blue will be a far cry from the prominent position he occupies at Nottingham. The youngster has there years to go on his current deal and is heavily linked with an exit this summer.
Tottenham’s interest in Johnson has gone cold of late but hopefully will be reignited following Chelsea’s entry into the fold. We will do well to reinforce the attack following Harry Kane’s departure and Johnson could be an unassuming yet solid addition.
