Tottenham Hotspur set their sights on Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino
According to Spanish publication Fichajes.net, Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on talented midfielder Mikel Merino and will look to sign him from La Liga club Real Sociedad in the summer.
The Spanish midfielder has been plying his trade for Sociedad for quite some time now. He is one of the club’s most important players and his influence knows no bounds. The Spanish club have been very consistent in recent seasons, thanks to players like him.
Mikel Merino is easily one of the most underrated players going around him. No one really seems to talk about him in world football and he is mostly followed only by those who are avid watchers of La Liga.
Mikel Merino is the first opposition player to score an open play goal against Barcelona at Camp Nou in LaLiga this season.

Whilst the Pedris Gavis and Bellinghams of the world are the hot prospects in the Spanish league, Merino tends to go under the radar, much like his performances which are almost always solid if not spectacular.
Spanish World Cup-winning coach Vincente del Bosque once very famously said: “You watch the game, you don’t see Busquets. You watch Busquets, you see the whole game”. This quote could be true for Merino.
When such a talented player is on the blocks, Manchester City aren’t a club that likes to be left behind. Understandably, they are leading the race for the Spaniard with Tottenham remaining a close second.
When Merino looks at the Man City team, he is likely to see his national teammate Rodri in there and go, “Where will I even play here?”. He would be wary of becoming another Kalvin Phillips in Manchester and this might make him look at other options.
If he turns around and looks at Tottenham, he will see the club crying out for someone who can control the game from the middle of the part; someone who can free the likes of James Maddison and Yves Bissouma.
