Tottenham Hotspur confirm Johan Lange as new director, Aston Villa confirm departure

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Johan Lange will join the club as their new technical director, finally filling the void left by Fabio Paratici.

The Italian left Spurs in April after he was banned for 30 months by Italian authorities following an investigation into Juventus. A statement from Spurs read (h/t Evening Standard):

“Lange will have responsibility for recruitment, analytics and talent identification across our senior and academy teams.”

The 43-year-old Dane will report directly to chief football officer Scott Munn, who joined the club this summer itself. Munn said of the appointment:

“Johan has demonstrated an excellent track record of scouting and signing many talented and successful youth and senior players. He is a welcome addition as we strengthen our football operations.”

Good appointment

Lange notably served as an assistant coach at Copenhagen and Wolverhampton Wanderers and this will undoubtedly be a huge step up for him. He joined Aston Villa in the summer of 2020 as their sporting director before being assigned the role of global director of football development and international academies.

Villa are a well-run club, as evidenced by their rise under Unai Emery in recent months. They have also made some truly eyebrow-raising signings this summer, including stars such as Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby, and Nicolo Zaniolo.

We haven’t done too bad in that department ourselves this summer, but Lange’s specialization will surely come in handy. He will also seemingly be involved in the role of promoting youth talent and perhaps, help us find our new Harry Kane.

Let’s hope he also lends a hand in the transfer windows that follow because we could really use one more forward for depth and perhaps another holding midfielder. If Munn has praised Lange’s scouting abilities, he is sure to hand him a similar role here as well.

He will join his new post on November 1, two months before the start of the January transfer window. It seems we have gotten over Paratici and that relationship has ended for good.
