Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier wanted by Sporting CP and AS Roma

Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier could potentially re-join Sporting CP at the end of the 2023-24 season.

This is according to the Times (Subscription Required), who also claim that Jose Mourinho, who managed Dier at Spurs, is also interested in reuniting with him at AS Roma. The England international is on a contract that expires next summer.

Hence, a potential free transfer could be on the cards. Dier is arguably the one player whose Tottenham career has taken a massive hit after Ange Postecoglou’s appointment.

The Englishman was a first-choice centre-back under Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino, Mourinho, and other managers at Spurs in recent years. But this season, he has played 0 minutes of football.

What next for Dier?

He has only made the bench thrice, all of which came in Premier League encounters. Cristian Romero is arguably one of the best centre-backs in the world and an irreplaceable part of the backline.

But Micky van de Ven’s rise to prominence since his £43million transfer from VfL Wolfsburg in the summer has been a major reason behind the 29-year-old’s decline in the pecking order.

The 22-year-old Dutchman is a left-footed centre-back and seems to fit our defensive system perfectly. Not to mention, he seems that he will only get better with time.

Even Davinson Sanchez seems to be ahead of the former Sporting man in the pecking order. Dier joined Spurs in 2014 and has been an immaculate servant to the club since then, making 360 appearances across competitions.

A potential return to Sporting CP would see him return to the club where he honed his skills from 2003 to 2014 before making the switch to Tottenham.
