Tottenham Hotspur want to sell Eric Dier with Sporting CP interested

According to the Times (Subscription Required), Sporting CP are interested in making a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier.

On top of that, The Athletic’s Mark Critchley has claimed that Spurs are not looking to keep the England international beyond the current season. He says a return to Sporting makes sense.

A summary of Critchley’s comments on the Football Gossip Daily show was given by BBC, which reads:

“The Athletic’s Mark Critchley says Tottenham defender Eric Dier isn’t the kind of defender the club are looking for going forward, and that a move back to Sporting Lisbon “makes sense” for the 29 year-old.”

Dier isn’t playing at all under manager Ange Postecoglou. It is clear that he prefers Cristian Romero in defence alongside summer signing Micky van de Ven.

What should Spurs do?

The Dutch defender was signed this summer by Postecoglou himself, so it was obvious that he was going to get his fair share of chances. Dier has been an incredible player for us in recent seasons.

But this could be the chance to sever our ties with him. Dier’s contract expires in June 2024 (Transfermarkt). That means teams should come to the fore for him once he becomes a free agent.

He is an England international who still has several years ahead of him. For us, it would be a chance to get him off our wage books. It also raises an interesting question.

Should Spurs look to sell him in January to avoid losing him on a free transfer? Sporting, who had Dier on their books before he moved to north London all those years back, would know that they can get the player to sign a pre-contract agreement in winter.

Perhaps Spurs are better off keeping him in their team for depth. He isn’t really ‘world-class’ in everyone’s books but he can get the job done when we need him.
