Antonio Conte says he has no regrets over Tottenham rant right before sack

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte speaks amidst links to Serie A giants Napoli

Gone are the days of Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur. Gone are those days when the Spurs team played a brand of football that could put you to sleep. Gone are those days when watching 90 minutes of the club playing felt more like an ordeal than a pleasure.

That is not to suggest that the Italian manager was a total bust in North London. He had his moments, especially in the first half-season at the club. However, as is the case with most of the clubs he has managed, it all soon goes downhill.

Under Antonio Conte, Tottenham certainly improved their fitness standards. They also had some absolutely memorable wins along the way. Sadly though, not much translated into terms of results in the long run.

Disagreements with players, rigidity in playing style and a general sense of failure to adapt kind of defined the Conte era at Tottenham. His successor though, Ange Postecoglou, has been the polar opposite.

The Australian manager is as charming as it gets, wants his teams to play an attacking brand of football and is fostering a family-like culture that seems to be bringing the best out of everyone at the club.

Conte meanwhile has been linked with a return to Italy and reigning champions Napoli are said to be interested. Speaking about the situation as quoted by the Mirror, here is what the former Tottenham manager had to say

“For now I’m enjoying my family, I made a clear choice when I left England. You know that many things can happen along the way. Going to Naples? We must always have great respect so let us enjoy this evening.”

As good a manager as Antonio Conte is, the bottom line is that he failed to do anything meaningful at Spurs. Most importantly, a serial winner like him failed to break Tottenham’s trophy drought.

Now, with Naples calling, Conte might be tempted. However, the reigning champions seem to be making the same mistake that we did when we appointed the Italian. He is not the manager for the kind of football that the Italian giants want to play.
