Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison speaks after Australia win

A 1-0 win against Australia is not likely to hog the headlines from an English perspective but Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison believes that it was a very important win for the Three Lions against the country from which his club manager happens to be.

Ollie Watkins’ sole strike in the 57th minute was sufficient for the English team to get past the Socceroos. Ideally, Gareth Southgate might have wanted his team to win more clinically but a win is a win nevertheless.

James Maddison, the Tottenham Hotspur magician started the game for the Three Lions in his preferred number 10 role. He was his usual self, confident on the ball and always attempting the audacious.

Formerly playing for Leicester City, the 26-yer-old made the move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer following the Foxes’ relegation to the Championship. His start to life at the N17 has been simply sensational.

Maddison has formed an excellent partnership with Son at Tottenham and have been the flag bearers of this new project under Ange Postecoglou. Spurs have been craving for such a midfield presence ever since Christian Eriksen left the club all those years ago.

Speaking about the Australian football team, here is what Maddison had to say after beating them last night

“It was alright. Australia are a really good team and we did not underestimate them. Playing for England is the pinnacle, I will never ever take that for granted. Tuesday will be a great occasion, we can secure qualification with the win and that is the aim. The lads will be highly motivated because of what happened last time”

Life does not get easier for England and Maddison as they are set to face Italy in a few days time. Under Luciano Spaletti, the Serie A winning coach, they are playing some good football and might be a challenge for us.

Going by form, Maddison must be a shoo-in for the game against the 2006 World Cup winners but Gareth Southgate is spoilt for choices and might choose to rotate his squad and bring in some fresh faces.
