Gary Mabbutt: Tottenham stars Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven impress under Ange Postecoglou
In Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, Tottenham Hotspur appear to finally have a formidable centre-back pairing as Ange Postecoglou continues to turn the club’s fortunes for the good.
Romero was brought to the club in the summer of 2022 and is today amongst our best players. While the likes of Eric Dier have partnered him at the heart of the rearguard, the arrival of Micky van de Ven this summer appears to have landed him the perfect partner.
Spurs have conceded a mere eight goals this season in the Premier League and occupy the top position after eight games played. The defensive duo certainly have to take credit for this solidity and for making life easier for new goalkeeper Gulgielo Vicario in between the sticks.
Speaking on talkSPORT via X, Tottenham legend Mabbutt has heaped praise on Romero and Van de Ven. He believes the duo complement each other well and can lay the foundations for years to come.
An excellent indicator of the duo’s success can be gauged from Mabbutt comparing them to Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian duo formed the bedrock of our rearguard under Mauricio Pochettino and were amongst the best in their position in the league.
“Him and Romero can now make a very very solid partnership like we had with Jan Vertonghen and Toby (Alderweireld). They are working well together.
"I don't think that anybody imagined when Ange came in that there would be such a quick turnaround." 😮

Coming into a new league is never easy, let alone the Premier League. Van de Ven has adjusted to life in north London well and will only get better with experience. Romero too will only get better and also now has an eyar in England under his belt.

Attacks win matches but defences win you championships. A strong base is needed for us to challenge over the course of a season and Postecoglou is quietly going about doing just that. Hopefully, all this hype will bear us fruit in the years to come.
