Tottenham starlet Alejo Veliz tipped to have an ‘incredible aerial game’
Alejo Veliz might only be 20 years old but he has already garnered so much hype and attention at Tottenham Hotspur that one might have been mistaken that the club signed a genuine superstar.
For a player who is yet to make a mark in the senior level of the game, the amount of praise he gets from those who have seen him at Rosario is genuinely unreal and kind of makes you realise that the club have a special player on their hands.
So, who is Veliz and what does he bring to the table? His former coach Adrian Dezotti claims that he is a player who once made the opposition manager ‘want to kill him’
“Alejo is really intelligent but also very cunning, mischievous. He has a lot of tricks up his sleeve, a lot of street smarts. He’s a strategist, a quick thinker. I remember one game, a very tricky away match against Lanus, the year when we finished third in the league:
“We were winning 2-1 when one of their strikers broke through alone. He ran from halfway, leaving our defenders behind, and looked certain to score. But then Alejo whistled, pretending it was the referee stopping the game. The striker stopped and one of our centre-backs stole the ball. The Lanus coach wanted to kill him”
So, Tottenham fans, brace yourselves for what is coming your way. Now, we are not sure Ange Postecoglou would appreciate such antics on a football pitch but what this story does is establish the Argentinian wonderkid’s desire to win a football game.
Coming to his footballing abilities though, Dezotti has a statement that would definitely polarize opinion. As quoted by the Athletic [subscription required], he firmly believes ‘there is no other Premier League player who has the aerial game that Alejo has’. He claims that it’s incredible.
Standing at 6ft 1in (186cm), Alejo Veliz is not the tallest player going around. That doesn’t stop him from being excellent in the air though if the assessment of his former coach is to be believed. It is a huge statement to make.
In a league that has Carlton Morris, Oliver McBurnie, Thomas Soucek and Ethan Pinnock amongst others, going on to claim that a 6ft 1in 20-year-old has the best aerial game comes as quite a surprise.
It is telling when you consider the fact that Ange Postecoglou who had initially claimed that he would not be in the first-team picture at least in the first half of the campaign decided to fast-track him. Whilst it was partially due to injuries, credit must also be given to his performances on the pitch.
