Kalvin Phillips speaks about his future amidst Tottenham Hotspur links
Kalvin Phillips is considered as a transfer target for Tottenham and honestly has had one of the weirdest careers in recent memory. For all the plaudits that he earned at Leeds United, he has hardly started a game for Manchester City.
Now, we know how City operate. If Pep Guardiola did not rate the player, he would not have signed him in the first place. So, what went wrong? Why does the Spanish tactician not give the English midfielder any game time?
One reason could be due to the presence of Rodri. The Spaniard is probably the best defensive midfielder in the world at the moment and when fit and available, he is one of the first names on the team sheet.
Competing with him was never going to be easy for Phillips but even when Guardiola has played a midfield two and even though the former Leeds man can play as an interior, the Barcelona legend has chosen the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes and even Rico Lewis.
The funny thing with Kalvin Phillips is that no matter how much game time he gets at his club, Gareth Southgate always calls him up to the national team. To be fair to him, he looks decent every time he plays.
With Guardiola, we have seen in the past where he signs players but does not use them much for the first couple of seasons before making them very prominent there on. We have seen this happen with Jack Grealish, Nathan Ake and Joao Cancelo in the past.
However, somehow, we don’t get the same feeling about Phillips. The talented midfielder has now spoken about his future and understandably, he is not happy, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano (h/t BBC)
“I know that I need to be playing games and competing every weekend. I’m going to have to make a decision on my City future over the next months… Hopefully my chance comes but if it doesn’t then I will have to make other decisions”
Tottenham have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old English midfielder and could consider him to be the replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg should the Dane leave the club in January.
