Kevin Wimmer says former Tottenham star Mousa Dembele could have played for Real Madrid
Kevin Wimmer has said that former Tottenham Hotspur teammate Mousa Dembele was the best player ever and could have gone on to play for Real Madrid.
Wimmer was signed by Spurs from Cologne for £4.3million in the summer of 2015 and spent two years here before being shipped to Stoke City. During that time, he got to play with Dembele.
The Belgian midfielder has been praised by many during his career for his passing skills and most importantly, ball control. The ball seemed to stick to his feet and he used to glide through midfield with ease.
Dembele spent six and a half years at Tottenham since arriving here from Fulham in the summer of 2012. He gave us a lot of memorable moments and was always a treat to watch when he was having his day.
Dembele underachieved in his career
Dembele had just 10 goals and 12 assists in 249 games for Tottenham, which is always underwhelming when we compare those stats to the player we saw. He should have had more goals and assists to his name but his primary job was retaining possession, evading the press, and finding his teammates in space.
Speaking about Dembele, Wimmer (30), who is currently playing for Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia, said, via the Athletic (Subscription Required):
“I always, always say it — the best player ever. This guy could easily play for Real Madrid in his prime and be one of the best players. So much class, never loses the ball, even if he has two or three opponents. He was so strong and technical, and his left foot was good.
“He was fast. He was so important for us and also for me — when he was playing as a No 6 in front of me, you always knew you were safe. Because if there are no options, there’s always the option to play to Mousa.”
That move to Real Madrid never came, although Dembele can be proud of being a big part of Tottenham’s modern history. He was arguably one of the most important players under Mauricio Pochettino’s reign, or at least the start of it, that established Spurs as a genuine top-four contender season after season.
