Ange Postecoglou sheds light on Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur and his return from injury
Ange Postecoglou will soon have Rodrigo Bentancur back available for selection as the Tottenham Hotspur midfield ace is close to recovering from his Cruciate Ligament tear.
One of the success stories under Antonio Conte, the Uruguayan is a solid presence in the middle of the park. His return will add another dimension to the Spurs midfield that have taken their performances up a notch.
However, given that Bentancur has been out for some time now, it is imperative that Tottenham ease him into the fold rather than rush him back. The last thing we need is for the 26-year-old to be rushed back into action before he is fully fit.
Speaking ahead of the clash against Fulham (h/t football.london), Spurs boss Postecoglou advocated a safety-first approach in helping Bentancur return to full fitness. He confirms that the Uruguayan is back in team training and is responding well to being back so far.
“We’ll be careful with him. Now he’s sort of fully training, so that means he’s into the whole session. We’ve drip-fed him into training the last month and he’s coped pretty well with that.”
A solid ball winner who also has an eye for goal, Bentancur is a dynamic presence in the middle of the park. Having him alongside a number 10 like James Maddison and a destroyer like Pape Matar Sarr certainly adds more balance to the Spurs side.
As things stand, Bentancur is responding well and will hopefully be back doing what he does best: make life difficult for opposition midfielders. Postecoglou cannot wait to have the 26-year-old back and neither can the fans.
“He’s looking good at training and it was great to have him for the last couple of weeks to fully integrate with the guys who are here and we’re looking forward to having him back.”
It will be too optimistic for us to expect Bentancur to return against Fulham. We have coped well in his absence this season and the onus is now on the coaches to ensure the player is given the requisite match fitness in the coming weeks.
