AS Roma want Tottenham Hotspur star and Bayern Munich target Eric Dier
According to Calciomercato.com, AS Roma are keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier — a name Jose Mourinho apparently appreciates.
Dier’s contract expires in the summer of 2024, which means foreign clubs can agree on a pre-contract with him in January. That is, if he doesn’t pen a new Tottenham deal, something which seems hard to happen now.
The Englishman has been completely frozen out of the team after Ange Postecoglou’s arrival. Micky van de Ven’s signing from VfL Wolfsburg this summer has sealed Dier’s fate.
Bayern Munich are also interested in him, and so are Sporting CP — the club where Dier rose through the ranks before signing for Tottenham in 2014. Mourinho would remember the 29-year-old from his time at Spurs.
What next for Dier?
He trusted Dier a lot during his stint. Moreover, he can play as a defensive midfielder and a centre-back — something which always comes in handy.
Moreover, with the signings of Nemanja Matic and Chris Smalling, Roma have shown that they aren’t averse to signing players struggling for action in England. But Spurs have to be careful
We have to ensure we have enough depth in central defence before sanctioning any such sales. There is, of course, the opportunity to sell him in January itself to avoid losing him on a free transfer, but it would be hard to find a suitor who would know he is a free agent in six months.
Ashley Phillips, along with Van de Ven, Romero, and Dier, completes our centre-back depth in the senior team for next season, unless we make new signings…. which we obviously should given Dier’s exit looks likely.
