Premier League icon Mark Schwarzer still unsure about Guglielmo Vicario signing at Tottenham Hotspur
Former Fulham and Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is still unconvinced about Guglielmo Vicario’s signing at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Italian goalkeeper was signed from Empoli in the summer for a fee of £17.2million. Spurs were then looking for Hugo Lloris’ successor, and truth be told, Vicario wasn’t the most famous name linked with us.
He had been called up by Italy before his move to Tottenham but he was still an unknown quantity to many fans in England. But he has been a revelation here.
The 27-year-old seems to be a late bloomer and is playing some of his best stuff in Tottenham colours. He has four clean sheets in 10 Premier League games this season, conceding just nine times.
Vicario has been sensational
These performances also include world-class saves that display his sensational reflexes. For example, Vicario’s same from Joao Palhinha in the 2-0 win against Fulham, his double save from Cody Gakpo and Andrew Robertson in the 2-1 win over Liverpool, and his save from Casemiro’s header in the second half of the win against Manchester United.
But Schwarzer is yet to be convinced. The 51-year-old Premier League icon praised Vicario’s form but raised question marks over his ability to maintain consistency. He said, via OPTUS:
“Look I think he’s done really well. I want to see how he goes further into the season. I hold my hand up, yes, so far he’s done well. But there are still question marks in my head about whether or not he is the right goalkeeper for them moving forward.
“At the moment, yes, it’s all positive, all working fine for him, but I’m not sure just yet. But he has had a good start to the season.”
There isn’t a lot more that Vicario can do to convince people of his abilities. Daniel Levy knew the task of replacing Hugo Lloris, who reached two FIFA World Cup finals as captain, was a difficult one.

He wouldn’t have signed just anyone to take up that role, and Vicario has shown why Spurs spent a decent sum on him in the summer. Perhaps not playing in the Premier League before this season makes him an unknown quantity for some, but from what we have seen of him, he seems to be the perfect, balanced goalkeeper for us.
