Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino gives verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League title credentials
Mauricio Pochettino went close to winning the Premier League title a couple of times at Tottenham Hotspur.
We had some promising starts but they were converted. Our best chance came in the 2015-16 season, when we took the title race all the way down to April, before it became clear Leicester City wouldn’t be caught.
But Poch, who was sacked just a few months after taking Spurs to the 2019 UEFA Champions League final, believes Tottenham have what it takes to go the distance this time around. He will return to N17 in the Premier League for the first in four years on Monday.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference before the emotional return in front of Tottenham fans, Pochettino said that the Lilywhites can challenge for the league title. He said, via Football.London:
“Yes I think so [Tottenham are title contenders]. They are doing a fanastic job. You feel they can be a contender. It is early in the season but they are showing the quality to be a contender.”
Spurs to go all the way?
Spurs lead the table after 10 games. 26 points, and still unbeaten. Ange Postecoglou‘s men are title contenders for sure, with more than 25% of the season already behind us.
Obviously, things start to get even more serious after the Christmas period. But we have shown that we are effective in any situation — leading, trailing, holding a lead, playing with 10 men, playing against 0 men— we have already done the lot.
But right now, these discussions are pointless. What we do know is if the core of the team stays fit for the majority of the season, and if a little bit of luck goes our way, then there is absolutely no reason why we can’t win the title.

No European football helps too (and no, it’s not the case of sour grapes). Taking it one game at a time is the best strategy. And right now, the focus has to be getting all three points against Chelsea on Monday.
