Martin Lipton makes ‘fame’ claim as the reason Eric Dier stayed at Tottenham Hotspur
Eric Dier is having a very curious time at Tottenham Hotspur. Always the bridesmaid but never the bride, the England international makes the matchday squad almost every other time but has not gotten any minutes.
For a player who featured so prominently in previous seasons at the same club, things have taken a downward tumble under Ange Postecoglou. It is not to say that Dier was without his critics but he was a handy player.
An influential figure in the dressing room who was a part of the leadership group until last season, we are not sure how Eric Dier‘s position is right now. He might not be playing on the pitch but does he have a say in the dressing room?
Well, Martin Lipton seems to think so. The journalist has claimed that the Englishman’s prominence among his teammates might be the reason he is still at the club and did not leave back in the summer.
Speaking to Off The Ball on YouTube [membership required], here is what Lipton had to say on Eric Dier’s situation
“Eric Dier is an interesting one, he’s in the squad every week, he’s just not playing. He’s a popular player, he’s very popular with the other players, he always has been. I think that’s one of the reasons he stayed actually. He’s a bit like Conor Coady at the World Cup it seems, he’s not going to play but he’s there for what he gives the group”
Until now, Dier has not come out and spoken about his lack of playtime but one can only imagine that he is not pleased. The English midfielder-turned-defender will certainly not be short of suitors should he make himself available.
Ange Postecoglou in his short time here is seeming to be an excellent man-manager and it would be a huge surprise if he has not already had a talk with Dier. With injuries bound to happen at some point in the season, he will want Dier to be ready.
With the Euros set to be held this year, Dier will know that he needs to play regularly to have an outside chance of making it to the England squad. To be honest, the Tottenham man will literally have to play out of his skin.
