Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill talks about Tottenham rivalry
Chelsea’s young centre-back, Levi Colwill, is no stranger to the intensity of the rivalry between the Blues and Tottenham Hotspur. The 20-year-old, who hails from the Cobham academy, is gearing up for his first senior clash against Spurs, but he’s no stranger to the fierce competition between the two sides, having tangled with Tottenham’s youth teams over the years.
For Tottenham fans, Chelsea’s visit is not just any fixture; it’s a chance to reclaim bragging rights and assert their dominance. The memories of past encounters, especially those hard-fought battles, should fuel the players and the supporters alike. It’s a rivalry that goes beyond points and positions in the league table. It’s about pride and passion.
Mauricio Pochettino’s return to north London as Chelsea’s manager adds another layer of intrigue to this clash. While he may be well-remembered for his time at Tottenham, there’s no room for sentiment on the pitch. Spurs fans know that they must stand their ground and give Pochettino’s side a stern welcome.
Levi Colwill recently spoke about the rivalry between the club and took a trip down memory lane to discuss a game from during his academy days at Chelsea and here is what he told the club’s media channel via football.london:
“We had the best rivalry with Tottenham growing up,”
“I can’t really remember if they ever beat us. Playing against them home or away, we knew it was going to be a fight and we really enjoyed it.”
“I remember once at under-16 (level) we played them in a cup game on the match pitch at Cobham, and we nicked it 2-1 or 1-0 in the last minute. It might have been a handball and someone scored. They were going crazy and it was the best feeling ever! It shut them up. They were the better team on the day but we got the win and that’s what matters. It was on the match pitch at Cobham.”
An intense rivalry
For Colwill and other youngsters who have witnessed and been a part of this rivalry at some point in their lives, it’s a chance to experience the senior ranks of this intense rivalry. The history of fierce battles, even at the youth level, has prepared them for the challenges that await.
In the past year, Tottenham have undergone a series of changes, searching for the right formula to return to their glory days. The arrival of Ange Postecoglou has injected fresh hope and optimism into the club, as they aim to put an end to their Premier League trophy drought. The early signs have been promising, and the team is riding high on positive form.
On the other hand, Chelsea’s fortunes have been a bit unpredictable. Their performances have swung between moments of brilliance and spells of inconsistency. As they travel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Lilywhites certainly have an opportunity to capitalise on Chelsea’s hot and cold form.
