Clinton Morrison lauds Tottenham star Giovani Lo Celso following his goal against Aston Villa
In the wake of Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, Clinton Morrison weighed in on Giovani Lo Celso and his goal, offering a perspective that acknowledges the quality of the strike and raises important considerations for the team’s future.
Morrison deemed Lo Celso’s goal “thoroughly deserved,” emphasising the disappointment Villa should feel for allowing the Argentine midfielder the time and space on the edge of the box to execute such a remarkable strike.
The defensive lapses from Aston Villa at that moment, leaving a player of Lo Celso’s calibre unmarked, saw them concede a goal which was probably avoidable. Having said that, Tottenham were dominating the game prior to Rodrigo Bentancur’s injury and had multiple chances to score and put the game to bed early, but it is what it is.
Speaking to BBC on Lo Celso and his goal, here is what Morrison had to say:
“Thoroughly deserved. Villa will be disappointed, you can’t leave someone on the edge of the box like that with Lo Celso. That much time and space, it’s a great strike.”
What adds intrigue to the analysis is the context surrounding Lo Celso’s limited playing time. The midfielder made only his fourth Premier League appearance of the season, reflecting a fall in the pecking order since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival at the club. Despite this, the former PSG man showcased his quality with a goal, prompting discussions about his role within the squad.
Complicating matters is the ongoing speculation linking Gio with a potential move away from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The player’s future has been the subject of transfer rumours, raising questions about his continuity with the club.
However, despite the transfer speculation, keeping Gio on board would contribute significantly to the team’s depth.
In the context of Tottenham’s current injury crisis, maintaining a player of Lo Celso’s measure becomes crucial. Amidst the injury issues plaguing the squad, having a player like him provides not only quality but also essential depth. The greater bench strength would prove invaluable as Tottenham navigate through a challenging period.
