Former Gunner Mesut Ozil aims dig at Tottenham in recent ‘X’ post
Former Arsenal player Mesut Ozil has reignited the North London rivalry with a stinging comment aimed at Tottenham Hotspur, labelling them ‘Bottle Job FC’ in the wake of their recent struggles. Ozil’s remark comes in the aftermath of Tottenham’s dip in form after an impressive start under manager Ange Postecoglou.
The Australian coach had steered Spurs to the top of the Premier League table after 10 games, earning praise for both results and the entertaining style of play. However, their fortunes took a sharp turn in the last five matches. A 4-1 defeat to Chelsea came in before disappointing losses to Wolves and Aston Villa.
A thrilling 3-3 draw against Manchester City momentarily halted the slide, but it remained short-lived, as London rivals West Ham secured a 2-1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday, adding to the woes of the home side.
Here is what Ozil posted on Twitter:
The recent struggles have been worsened by key players James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, and Rodrigo Bentancur facing long-term injuries, with their return not expected until 2024.
Spurs have certainly ‘bottled’ a few leads this season, and only we are responsible for Ozil taking a dig at us like this. Hopefully, Arsenal’s loss to Aston Villa has silenced the former Gunner but the Lilywhites must get back to winning ways sooner than later.
Having said that, the statistical revelation from OptaJoe further highlighted Tottenham’s unique but sad plight, being the first side in Premier League history to fail to win five consecutive games despite taking an early lead in each match and losing three consecutive home games despite initially going up 1-0.
