Barca eye a move for Spurs star Giovani Lo Celso amid Gavi injury worry
Barcelona manager Xavi has identified Tottenham’s Giovani Lo Celso as his preferred choice to strengthen the midfield following Gavi’s unfortunate ACL injury.
Xavi has been an admirer of the Argentina international for an extended period and sees him as the ideal player to complement Robert Lewandowski in Barcelona’s setup.
Lo Celso’s recent performances have certainly caught Xavi’s attention, with two goals in the last Premier League games against formidable opponents and a noteworthy assist for Argentina against Brazil in the last international break. The 27-year-old midfielder has showcased his versatility and creative prowess on the field, making him an attractive prospect for Barcelona’s midfield needs.
That is according to Sport. Despite Xavi’s interest and the apparent synergy he sees between Lo Celso and Lewandowski, Tottenham have been reluctant to engage in negotiations.
The club’s stance is justifiable, considering the ongoing injury crisis that has significantly depleted their squad. With key midfielders sidelined, including the likes of James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur, Tottenham cannot afford to lose further depth by parting ways with a valuable asset like Lo Celso.
Moreover, the Argentine midfielder still has a year and a half left on his contract with the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt). This contractual stability adds another layer of complexity to any potential negotiations. Spurs, rightfully prioritising squad stability and depth in the face of adversity, are not willing to entertain talks for Lo Celso at this time.
