Xavi Hernandez eyes Giovani Lo Celso, but Tottenham Hotspur reluctant to let go
Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas reported on X that FC Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez is interested in signing Giovani Lo Celso in the January transfer window. However, Tottenham Hotspur’s manager is also keen on keeping the Argentine midfielder.
The Standard notes that Lo Celso was a top target for Xavi during the summer, but both Tottenham and the player opted for his stay at the club. Lo Celso has been particularly impressive for Spurs recently, especially in matches against league leaders Manchester City and third-place Aston Villa, where he scored crucial goals.
Postecoglou said:
“He fits the way we play. I enjoy working with him and he seems to enjoy working with us.”
Lo Celso has thrived in the number eight role since the pre-season, showcasing moments of brilliance, tactical intelligence, and a keen scoring instinct.
Since the 2020-21 season, where he spent significant time on loan at Villarreal, Lo Celso has logged more Premier League minutes under manager Ange Postecoglou than in any other campaign.
Tottenham is likely to be interested in keeping Lo Celso, unless the player himself pushes for a transfer.
This year marks the first time Xavi has faced criticism in his role at Barcelona, making it intriguing to see if the club will consider a change. Lo Celso, who was out on loan in previous seasons, has made a strong comeback under Postecoglou, demonstrating his ability to adapt to various roles.
It remains to be seen whether Xavi and Barcelona will pursue a loan deal for Lo Celso as a potential replacement for Gavi, especially considering the team’s earlier focus on their pivot position. Oriol Romeu has not yet solidified his role as a regular starter.
