Spurs boss gives much-awaited update about Brennan Johnson’s injury that he sustained against Nottingham
Brennan Johnson‘s first game against his former club in a Tottenham shirt was cut short due to an injury. The Welsh international had to be subbed off after injuring his head in a defensive attempt. The booing crowd expressed concern after witnessing Johnson’s bloodied shirt.
Speaking to BBC, Ange Postcoglou gave an update regarding his player.
“We should be okay with Brennan, it was a nasty cut and will need some stitches but should hopefully be okay.” The exact return date for Brennan Johnson is still being determined.
Tottenham Hotspur are slowly getting back to winning ways and having Brennan Johnson unavailable could affect the team big time. Especially because it is not just Johnson’s absence that Ange will be dealing with in the upcoming days.
Apart from the piling list of injuries, the Lilywhites manager now also will be without Destiny Udogie and Yves Bissouma due to suspension. Udogie will miss the next game following his fifth yellow card of the season. On the other hand, Bissouma received a three-match ban owing to a straight red.
How does Brennan Johnson’s injury impact Ange Postcoglou?
James Maddison was handling the midfield for his boss quite well before succumbing to injury. The responsibility was then handed to Dejan Kulusevski at the heart of Tottenham’s midfield. Kulusevski bravely dealt with Bissouma and Johnson’s absence to help his side hold on to the two-goal lead despite being a man down.
However, it would be unfair to expect the same from the Swedish international every time. Being a natural winger, Dejan Kulusevski needs help from Son and Johnson to handle the wide areas when he plays centrally. Oliver Skipp is a viable option for the Tottenham boss but his lack of regular playing time is a concern.
Now that Postcoglou has revealed that Johnson’s injury is a ‘nasty cut’, there shouldn’t be prolonged negative effects of it. A string start to the season was marred by a series of sub-par performances from Tottenham. The club have finally registered back-to-back victories and they cannot risk any slip up from here.
