Dejan Kulusevski says he’s happy in the ‘free role’ under Ange Postecoglou
Tottenham’s 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground saw winger Dejan Kulusevski excel in the #10 role as he got a goal and an assist against Steve Cooper’s side. In the absence of James Maddison due to injury, the Swede has been putting in a shift in a “new role” and has been top-class.
‘A free role’, as he describes it, it is clear that Dejan is loving life at Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou. In 17 Premier League appearances this season, Deki has five goals and two assists to his name and ranks third on the club’s G/A charts below skipper Son Heung-min and Madders.
Four of his goal contributions have come as an attacking midfielder, and it is surely great that our players display their versatility whenever required. The only underlying issue is, only the attack at Tottenham remains stacked with both, the midfield and the defence needing reinforcements soon.
Let’s get to what Deki had to say about this new role as a #10 in conversation with Sky Sports via BBC:
“It was good to score and make an assist. I like to move a lot. I want to be free. It’s fun to change and move around.”
#10 Deki
The Swede’s adaptation to this new role has been nothing short of remarkable, highlighting his adaptability and commitment to the team’s cause.
The player’s enjoyment and effectiveness in this role align with manager Ange Postecoglou’s dynamic and attacking style of play. The ability of players like Kulusevski to seamlessly adapt to different positions enhances the team’s flexibility and provides solutions during the absence of key players.
However, as Tottenham bask in the success of their attacking prowess, the need for reinforcements in midfield and defence becomes apparent. The squad’s depth will face further challenges with Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

In summary, Kulusevski’s standout performance in the #10 role not only brings joy to Tottenham supporters but also underscores the squad’s reliance on versatile players. As the January transfer window looms, Postecoglou may seek additional signings to ensure sustained momentum and competitiveness across various competitions, acknowledging that while individual brilliance shines, a well-rounded squad remains essential for long-term success.
