Former Fulham and Nottingham Forest target Morato is on top of Tottenham boss Ange Postcoglou’s wishlist this transfer window
Tottenham Hotspur is in dire need of a defensive option and they have their eyes set on Morato. Ange Postcoglou is running short of options as of now. He will be gunning for a solid centre-back come January.
Tottenham got Micky van de Ven during the summer window for €43 million, who enjoyed a brilliant start in London. However, the stopper sustained a hamstring injury in their 4-1 defeat to Chelsea, keeping him sidelined until mid-February.
This unforeseen event forced Postcoglou to seek help from his full-backs Emerson Royal and Ben Davies and also Eric Dier. The Lilywhites have now locked on to the Benfica star to bolster their defensive lineup.
Per Express (h/t The Sun), Spurs sent scouts to watch Morato in action on at least four occasions in November. It is quite evident that Morato is indeed a strong candidate for the club. He was previously targetted by Fulham and Nottingham Forest. Their bids were however rejected at £21.4m and £25.8m respectively.
Morato’s CV makes his a strong contender
The Brazilian boasts an intimidating presence on the pitch. He has been a key part of Benfica’s squad this season. Ange Postcoglou can benefit from Morato’s presence within the squad.
It is not just Micky’s injury that the coach is dealing with at the moment but also Cristian Romero’s risky style of play. The Argentine defender’s aggression has earned him four yellow cards and one red card in just 14 appearances.
The Lilywhite head coach can use some stability within his ranks and Morato is the right fit. The SL Benfica stopper has only one yellow card to his game so far in the Liga Portugal. With Spurs slowly finding their rhythm, Ange Postcoglou would love to trust his players to stick to the plan.
