Jose Mourinho takes a ‘dig’ at Tottenham over surprise firing two days before the big game
Jose Mourinho stuck to being his natural self by taking a dig at Tottenham Hotspur for firing him on the eve of the Carabao Cup Final in 2021. The current Roma manager was sacked by the Spurs management despite being a cup-final specialist.
Mourinho’s exit forced an amateur Ryan Mason to don the manager’s role while they faced Manchester City. The Lilywhites succumbed to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Pep’s men. The ‘Special One’ brought up the baffling incident on John Obi Mikel’s podcast The Obi One Podcast on YouTube.
He took a sly dig by saying,
“The most ridiculous one was a club that has an empty trophy room sacks me two days before a final. That was the one that was… come on!”
Daniel Levy made a bold decision ahead of one of the most crucial moments in Spurs history recently. The move certainly backfired and the Tottenham chairman is facing the heat to date.
Who benefitted from parting ways?
Mourinho took the reins at Roma after finding the exit door at Tottenham. He has then kissed the Europa Conference League trophy and is a favourite to bag the Europa League this season. While Mourinho has found the purple patch after leaving London, Spurs are yet to add something to their cabinet.
Spurs is the only club that the Portuguese manager left without a trophy. Spurs should have trusted the man’s CV and given a shot at it. Ange Postcoglou’s men registered a strong start to the campaign this term.
The celebration didn’t last long as they dropped one point in a row while also dealing with suspensions and injury woes. Mourinho’s candid interview with John Obi-Mikel has reignited the conversation and also a bitter memory for the Spurs fans.

Jose Mourinho had his fans’ backing but not the management’s. During the interview, he also admitted that he wasn’t confident that Spurs would have defeated the Sky Blues in the final. But, we all know it would have been Tottenham’s best shot, if not a certain victory.
