Turkish club Fenerbahce ramp up efforts to sign Tottenham star who is finally getting some recognition from Postecoglou
A board member from Turkish giants Fenerbahce flew to Tottenham to discuss the possibility of a deal for Eric Dier, reports Turkish publication Takvim. The 29-year-old’s contract will run out in the summer. An extension is unlikely to be signed.
Dier has been with the club since 2014, during that time he has made 363 appearances for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt). Being a reliable anchor for the defensive line, the English defender has done his job.
But, now his time at the club seems to be up as Turkish club Fenerbahce has engaged Tottenham Hotspur in transfer talks. If a substantial offer is made we could see Dier go as soon as January arrives.
Often we have seen the English defender be sidelined. Postecoglou has at times played fullbacks instead of just opting to play a traditional centre-back like Dier. Now, with the return of Ben Davies and Cristian Romero, the 29-year-old will fall further down the pecking order.
After struggling for playing time earlier on Dier has finally started to see some action for the Spurs. He has been counted on a couple of times after Van de Ven went out to injury and Cristian Romero was suspended. He may be too traditional for Postecoglou’s system but the Turkish brand of football should be a good fit for him.
The Lilywhites have been in the market for a centre-back for quite some time now. It will most likely be the case that Dier will not be offloaded until a replacement has been secured. Postecoglou cannot risk stretching his roster even thinner.

It is possible that the Tottenham board members will not allow the 29-year-old to walk away for nothing. Which he will do if they let his contract run out.
Fans are expecting the Spurs to go all out in January. Signing a CB and offloading Dier at the same time is a very real possibility. Postecoglou will leave no stone unturned as he gears up for a run at the Premier League title.
