New Nottingham boss Nuno Espirito Santo talks about Tottenham regrets
Nuno Espirito Santo, the seasoned Portuguese manager, remains set to embark on a new challenge as he takes the helm at Nottingham Forest. His return to the Premier League comes after a brief but eventful stint with Tottenham Hotspur, where he faced challenges that led to his departure after just four months.
However, as he steps into the managerial role at Forest, Nuno expressed no regrets about his time at Spurs, emphasizing the constant pressure in football to prove oneself.
The former Al-Ittihad manager acknowledged the need to revamp his coaching style to navigate the competitive landscape of English football. Nuno’s appointment follows the dismissal of Steve Cooper, and he has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract to guide Forest through their current struggles.
Nuno’s return to the Premier League marks a significant shift from his previous role in Saudi Arabia, signifying a return to the intense and dynamic nature of English top-flight football. The Portuguese tactician’s time at Tottenham may have been brief, but he takes with him valuable experience and insights.
Nuno’s departure from Tottenham, though abrupt, did not leave him with lingering regrets. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be at Spurs and acknowledged that, despite the challenges, it was a pleasurable experience. Here is what Nuno told the Guardian:
“No regrets. It happened. It was a pleasure to be at Spurs. Things didn’t go well so you move forward. Do I have a point to prove? In football we have to prove ourselves every day, as coaches, managers and players. There is constant pressure to improve.”
With a lot of attack-minded players, Nuno’s pragmatic approach meant Tottenham’s attacking potential was certainly not fully utilised. The breaking point came after a 3-0 loss to Manchester United at home, which brought him the sack. Not that the results heading into the game were quite exciting as well, Tottenham only won nine of 17 games with the former Wolves manager at the helm.
