Tottenham eye a move for Torino centre-back Alessandro Buongiorno
24-year-old Italian international Alessandro Buongiorno of Torino has been one of Serie A’s top defenders this season. He has been a major contributor to the club’s decent defensive record in the domestic circuit this season, with Torino fourth-least in the league regarding goals against.
Tottenham are eyeing a move for Buongiorno and rightly so. The long-term injuries to Micky van de Ven and the fact that the Lilywhites have yet to find a replacement for the potentially outgoing duo of Eric Dier and Ben Davies certainly makes pursuing a central defender very necessary.
However, Ange Postecoglou and co. need to be wary of the other teams that sniff around Buongiorno’s situation and might want to have a crack at securing the services of the Turin-born. Domestically, the likes of Roma pose the biggest threat to other clubs that could be in the race for Buongiorno. Roma, Inter, Milan, Juventus and Napoli are all interested parties in Italy. Roma more so, given their thin squad depth in that department.
In England, Aston Villa, Chelsea and West Ham are among the interested parties alongside Tottenham. All of this is as per Roma Metropolitan Magazine. Our friends over at FBRef can confirm that in terms of defensive actions this season, Buongiorno is toe-to-toe with Tottenham’s very own Cristian Romero.
Buongiorno to the Lilywhites?
Moreover, Buongiorno is a tactically agile defender. With his abilities to feature as a left-back alongside his natural central defence tendencies, he would offer his manager many options when it comes to setting up the backline. He can slot in the left side of a back three, feature as one of two central defenders in a back four, and also as the left flanker for the centre-backs.
The January window offers just the right opportunity for the Lilywhites to flex their financial muscles and get a deal for Buongiorno over the line before any other club gets air of it. €30m should be affordable for a club of Tottenham’s stature.
