Son Heung-min sends message to his teammates to play the way they started their season
According to the Evening Standard, our top goal-scorer so far this season, Son Heung-min sets an example of his former teammate Harry Kane before leaving for the Asian Cup starting in a few days.
Son said:
“I feel [it’s] like when Harry was here and he was missing some games with injuries. I felt like I needed to step up in previous years, I hope our players have this kind of feeling that they need to step up.”
In a gritty match against Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve, Son netted his 12th goal of the season, propelling Spurs to a narrow 3-1 victory and bringing them within striking distance of fourth-placed Arsenal.
Beginning with Friday’s FA Cup match against Burnley, Son may be absent for as many as five upcoming Tottenham games. After the £100m summer departure of Kane, Son has emerged as the new star player for a team that begins the New Year in fifth position.
Son frequently stepped up his performance when Kane, who departed from Spurs to join Bayern Munich in the summer, was not available – particularly during Spurs’ journey to the 2019 Champions League Final. He is optimistic that players such as Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Brennan Johnson will exhibit a similar level of performance in his absence.
Pape Matar Sarr of Senegal might play in the African Nations Cup if his leg muscle injury gets better. But Yves Bissouma from Mali won’t be there because he is banned right now and can’t join the team until next month, not even in January. But, Ange Postecoglou got some good news about players when Rodrigo Bentancur came back. He’s been out since November with a hurt ankle ligament problem.
To truly succeed in the second half of the season, Tottenham must learn to control and channel the unpredictable nature of their game. They must become adept at handling various situations and strive for consistent performances throughout the entire 90 minutes, rather than relying on sporadic bursts of brilliance.

If there are new arrivals in January and some players returning from injury, the team has the potential to reach great heights. If 2023 marked Tottenham’s rekindling of joy, then 2024 must be solely focused on the task at hand.
