Tottenham will have to welcome back Sergio Reguilon as Manchester United trigger break clause
Sergio Reguilon is back but that is not something Tottenham Hotspur fans might be too excited about. Manchester United have triggered the break clause in his contract.
The Spaniard is the perfect example of an ’emergency signing’ for the Red Devils. Following injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, Erik ten Hag was left scrambling for options. He decided to turn to the out-of-favour Spurs man.
Reguilon did an excellent job at United. In the games that he played, he looked solid defensively. Going forward, he did a very good job like he always does. He did have his fair share of fitness issues though.
That said, David Ornstein on Twitter has revealed that the Red Devils have decided to send Reguilon back to the N17. It seems like that was always the plan with the former Real Madrid defender.
Even his impressive performances have not convinced Man United to hold on to him until the end of the season. Luke Shaw is back but Tyrell Malacia is nowhere close to a return. Interesting to see what Erik ten Hag will do if the former suffers another injury.
Does Reguilon have a chance at Tottenham?
The more you think about it, the more it feels like Reguilon was a left-back born to play for an Ange Postecoglou team. He has all the attributes required to thrive in this role. So, is there hope?
Considering how Spurs have had so many injuries this season in defence, there is no doubt that the 27-year-old would have featured a lot had he stayed in the first place. With Ben Davies operating primarily as a central defender, the Spaniard could occupy a spot as Destiny Udogie’s backup.
The Italian seems to have a penchant for making a rough challenge here and there and is always close to a suspension. Having a quality attacking reinforcement like Reguilon could really help us in this regard.

It remains to be seen what Postecoglou thinks of Reguilon. Will he keep him this January or does the Spaniard have to find another club by the end of this window? Let’s wait and see.
